For library patrons who have accumulated overdue fines, paying the total amount can be overwhelming. As a relief and way to support the Josephine County Food Bank, the libraries in Grants Pass, Illinois Valley, Williams, and Wolf Creek will offer Back to School Fine Amnesty, accepting nonperishable food items in lieu of cash payments from Tuesday, September 6 through Saturday, September 17, 2016.
“Get your first passing grade of the school year at the library!” said JCLI Children’s Librarian Cherè Brown. “Fine Amnesty is a great way to clear up any overdue library fines and benefit the Food Bank.”
Each donated item forgives $5 in fines. JCLI will credit accounts with previously incurred fines on overdue items returned during Back to School Fine Amnesty, regardless of how long overdue, in return for donations of non-perishable, non-expired food items.
When “paying” a fine with donated food items, patrons should bring overdue library materials to a check-out volunteer at any of the libraries before depositing donations into the collection containers. Replacement costs for lost library cards or lost or damaged materials will not be resolved by donations.
