As the nonprofit organization that provides financial support for the Josephine Community Library District, the Josephine Community Library Foundation (JCLF) affirms its unequivocal support for the library district in response to the Josephine County Board of Commissioners’ vote on January 6 to terminate the lease for the Grants Pass library branch.
This decision raises serious concerns about the legality and process of the termination. The foundation calls on the county commissioners to reverse their vote and honor the library’s lease agreement, which is set to run through December 31, 2025. The library is a vital community resource, and decisions about its future should reflect thoughtful collaboration and input from the public.
Library donors, volunteers, and patrons have expressed frustration and a desire to support the library during this critical time. The foundation has provided tools to make that possible, including contact information for the county commissioners and a customizable letter template on its website. These resources empower residents to voice their concerns and advocate for the library.
“The Josephine Community Library Foundation has long been dedicated to ensuring a stable and thriving library system for our community,” said Executive Director Rebecca Stoltz. “This decision by the commissioners jeopardizes access to critical library services, but it also underscores the importance of our work. We encourage supporters to speak out and join us in building a sustainable future for the library.”
The termination is scheduled to take effect in 30 days following written notification, potentially disrupting access to critical library programs and services relied upon by thousands of Josephine County residents.
Recognizing the need for an independent and stable future for the library, the foundation has been actively working since 2019 to secure a new facility free from the constraints of county ownership. In June 2023, the foundation purchased a centrally located property in downtown Grants Pass and continues raising funds to construct a modern library building. This project reflects the community’s long-term vision for a sustainable and thriving library system that serves all residents of Josephine County.
