Library Unveils New BearFest Bear, “Beary Tales”

June 13, 2025 in

Josephine Community Library invites the community to a special celebration as it unveils a brand-new BearFest bear, generously sponsored by Evergreen Federal Bank. The public event will take place on Wednesday, June 18 at 12:30 pm at the Grants Pass library, 200 NW C Street.

In partnership with the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce, the event will feature a ceremonial ribbon cutting with Chamber Ambassadors, followed by a meet-and-greet with BearFest artist Kel Letvenchuck at 1:00 pm.

The new bear, titled “Beary Tales,” is a heartwarming addition to the beloved BearFest collection. Designed by local artist Kel Letvenchuck, the sculpture features two baby bears reading books together, symbolizing the joy of storytime and the importance of early literacy and lifelong reading.

“We are honored to receive a new BearFest bear at the library,” said Library Director Kate Lasky. “Beary Tales is more than a sculpture — it’s a reminder of our community’s shared commitment to literacy and learning.”

Special Thanks to Evergreen Federal Bank for sponsoring “Beary Tales” and for their ongoing commitment to literacy and the arts in our community.

The community is encouraged to attend this free event, learn more about BearFest, and help celebrate the new addition to the Grants Pass library grounds.

About the Artist
Kel Letvenchuck is a visual artist whose work weaves together whimsy, storytelling, and imagination. After relocating to Grants Pass from Southern California in 1993, she quickly became involved in the local arts scene, volunteering at the Grants Pass Museum of Art and connecting with the creative community.

Her BearFest journey began in 2003 when she was invited to paint a bear for the annual event — an opportunity that launched a 20-year creative adventure. Over the years, Kel has painted eight BearFest bears, collaborated with fellow artists, and developed new techniques for working with fiberglass and sculpted surfaces.

In 2024, she was invited to restore and redesign her original 2004 Josephine Community Library bear. With input from the library team, she created a new sculpture, Beary Tales, that celebrates early literacy and the joy of reading. The piece reflects Kel’s signature blend of charm and purpose, inspiring curiosity and connection for all ages.
