Be a part of the library in 2015

The volunteers and staff of Josephine Community Libraries are encouraging community members to make a donation by the end of May to help the library meet its fiscal year budget goals and become sustainable.

Last year, more than 300,000 items were checked out of the four libraries in Grants Pass, Williams, Wolf Creek, and the Illinois Valley. Over 6000 children participated in literacy programs and online library database usage increased by 230 percent.

When you donate, you help make every one of those interactions happen, and by doing so, you become part of the library.

As you know, in November of 2014 citizens of Josephine County placed a measure on the ballot to permanently fund the libraries, which was defeated by 53 percent of the vote. Today, the libraries continue to operate thanks to generous donations and the heroic contributions of more than 390 volunteers who work 28,285 hours annually.

If you voted YES on the November ballot for the formation of a library district we ask you to recommit to being part of the library in 2015 by donating what you would have paid in taxes before the end of May. If everyone who voted yes on Measure 17-62 contributes what they were willing to pay in taxes to support their libraries — about $58 per year on average — we could have a $1 million library system.

With your donation, you help provide one of the cornerstones of a democracy: a free public library, accessible to all.

Our hope is that the more than 15,000 people who voted yes for the library taxing district last year will donate what they would have paid in taxes if the measure had passed. If you haven’t yet sent in your 2015 contribution, please consider making a donation today, and each year. With your help, and the help of everyone who cares about our community, we can keep our libraries open.

When you are part of the library, you are part of the community.

Those interested in donating can send a check or money order payable to “Josephine Community Libraries” to P.O. Box 1684, Grants Pass, OR 97528.
