Families are invited to join the free Summer Reading Program at any of the four branches of Josephine Community Libraries.
This year the elementary program is called “On Your Mark, Get Set, READ!” and the middle school/teen program is called “Get in the Game: READ.“
Children ages birth through 12 years can enjoy creative crafts and storytelling sessions, and play reading Bingo for special prizes.
Teens can earn a weekly raffle ticket for each book read, and the chance to win a $50 gift certificate to Oregon Books and Games every week.
Parents who attend with their children every week have a chance to win a $100 gift card to Fred Meyer at the end of the program.
Every week for the six-week Summer Reading Program, your child will record the titles of the books they have read or that have been read to them on their Reading Record, provided by program volunteers. The weekly goal for age birth to nine years old is to read five books, and the goal for age 10–12 years is to read three chapter books.
Each child meeting their weekly goal will receive a sticker to add to their personalized Reading Record. Every week, he or she will receive an additional sticker until the end of the program.
Each child meeting the weekly goal will also receive a special coupon from a local business sponsor.
Every participating child may also earn an additional prize by completing one weekly reading Bingo game. Books read for Bingo may also be listed in the Reading Record. Only one Bingo is allowed for each child per week.
The program is completely free and offered during regular library hours at all four branches.
Summer reading programs have long been acknowledged by researchers and the general public as key to the long-term academic success of students. Numerous studies have shown that reading over the summer months prevents “summer reading loss,” which can have a cumulative effect. Studies show that by the end of 6th grade, children who lose reading skills over the summers are two years behind their classmates.
