Adopt-an-Hour program

The Adopt-an-Hour program supports the rural community libraries in Illinois Valley, Williams, and Wolf Creek by increasing their local library’s hours of access. You can help your library and your community by helping fund one hour — or more — each week for a year!

Since December 2009, all four branches of the libraries in Josephine County were reopened after about two years of being closed. Now being run by the nongovernmental nonprofit organization Josephine Community Libraries, Inc. (JCLI), all four libraries are mostly volunteer-operated.

Because of the shoestring budget funded by donations from individuals and businesses (rather than regular tax-based revenue like normal libraries), the hours of operation are minimal at best. The main branch in Grants Pass is open 24 hours per week, while the rural branches in Illinois Valley, Williams, and Wolf Creek are open only 10 to 13 hours per week (see the sidebar to the right for each branch’s actual hours of operation). A typical library is open at least 40 hours per week.

All library branches offer materials, services, and programs unique to their community. The people in all our local communities are clamoring for more access, asking that their libraries be open for more hours.

To respond to this need, JCLI offers local businesses and individuals the opportunity to sponsor an additional hour per week through the Adopt-an-Hour program. With more hours for after-school storytimes, homework help, computer access, and research assistance, rural area libraries will be better able to serve their communities with vital library services.

Already, a contribution from the City of Cave Junction has made it possible to increase hours for the Illinois Valley library, and the Harm Reduction Center of Southern Oregon has increased hours for the Wolf Creek branch for two years. Most recently, the Williams community, challenged by the Williams Friends of the Library and a generous match from Herb Pharm, has raised enough money to add two hours a week from July 2013 to July 2014.

Note that the Adopt-an-Hour program is not available for the Grants Pass main branch.

The cost of an additional hour each week per year varies per branch. But as an example, if a single hour of operation costs $40, an additional hour each week for an entire year would cost $2,080. To provide the consistency needed by our library users, hours are not changed until the financial commitment covers a full year.
