Josephine Community Libraries, Inc.

Josephine Community Libraries, Inc. (JCLI) is the nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that managed and operated the libraries in Josephine County from 2009 through 2017.

history

The organization formed because of a county government funding crisis which forced the closure of the Josephine County Library System in May 2007. In September that year, committed community members formed Josephine Community Libraries, Inc. as a nonprofit organization dedicated to reopening and operating the libraries until public (tax-based) funding could be restored.

On December 20, 2008, the Grants Pass library opened again. On September 5, 2009, the Illinois Valley library was reopened. On November 7, 2009, the Williams library was reopened. With the reopening of the Wolf Creek branch on December 19, 2009, all four library branches in Josephine County were restored.

From that time until December 31, 2017, the libraries operated largely on the efforts of about 360 heroic volunteers annually and private donations from individuals, business sponsorships, and grants.

In May 2017, voters approved the formation of the Josephine Community Library District, which assumed library operations and management on January 1, 2018.

dissolution

With the library district now fully operating the library system, the nonprofit JCLI is now in the process of dissolving as an organization. It has transferred its assets to Josephine Community Library District and transferred its fundraising operation to Josephine County Library Foundation. JCLI is expected to dissolve before June 30, 2018.

Josephine Community Libraries is governed by the JCLI Board of Directors. It typically meets at 6 pm the fourth Thursday of each month at the Grants Pass branch of Josephine Community Libraries, in the Ben Bones Room. All are welcome.
