The history of gay and lesbian liberation in the United States is marked by resilience, activism, and significant social progress. Beginning in the early 20th century, with the first gay rights organization founded in 1924, the movement gained visibility in the 1950s and 1960s through groups like the Mattachine Society and the Daughters of Bilitis. The 1969 Stonewall Inn uprising was a turning point, sparking the modern gay rights movement and the first Pride parades in the 1970s. Milestones include the declassification of homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1973, and the activism during the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. The 1990s saw both progress and setbacks with “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and the Defense of Marriage Act. The 21st century brought rapid advancements, including the decriminalization of same-sex activity, nationwide legalization of same-sex marriage, and the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Despite ongoing challenges, the LGBTQ+ movement’s history showcases enduring strength and determination.
