Survey Highlights Community Engagement with Josephine Community Library

Josephine Community Library District (JCLD) released the results of its 2024 Patron Survey, which gathered input from 1,441 participants. This represents a 20 percent increase in responses compared to the 2023 survey, reflecting increased engagement with the library’s services.

The findings highlight the library’s significant role within the community, as demonstrated by the 25,910 active library cardholders across the four branches in Grants Pass, Illinois Valley, Williams, and Wolf Creek.

“The data collected through this survey offers insights into the changing needs of our patrons and volunteers,” said Library Director Kate Lasky. “It will inform the library’s planning and development efforts as we continue to enhance our services and facilities.”

The survey indicates steady satisfaction among patrons, with 63 percent rating their library experience as “excellent.” One respondent noted the library’s role in their life, stating, “The library provides valuable resources for education and fosters a sense of community. It is an accessible space for learning that benefits all ages.”

Physical books remain the most commonly cited reason for library visits, with digital resources identified as the second most frequent. On average, patrons check out 20,000 physical items monthly, illustrating the sustained popularity of physical materials.

Attendance at library programs also increased compared to the previous year, with patrons expressing interest in creative, science-based, and lifelong learning opportunities. Respondents identified facility improvements, including expanded shelving, additional parking, upgraded Wi-Fi, and more quiet spaces, as areas of priority.

Digital engagement remained high, with 80 percent of respondents reporting they visited the library’s website within the past year.

Survey data highlights an increase in volunteer satisfaction, with 97 percent of volunteers reporting a stronger sense of appreciation and fulfillment in their roles. A volunteer remarked, “The structure and support provided by the library allow me to contribute meaningfully to its operations.”

The survey findings will guide ongoing assessment and development, ensuring that the library continues to align its offerings with community needs and priorities.
