Stone Soup Storybook Walk

Library partners with Grants Pass businesses for family outdoor reading activity

Josephine Community Library has partnered with downtown Grants Pass businesses to launch its first Storybook Walk throughout the month of September featuring the classic fable “Stone Soup.”

A Storybook Walk is an outdoor reading and walking experience of a children’s book with the pages of the book placed in different areas along a walking path. In Grants Pass, the pages are displayed in the windows of local businesses on both sides of 6th Street between “G” street and “I” Street. The first “chapter” is located at The Emporium, 202 SW G Street.

Participating businesses include The Emporium, Cultured Palate, Rogue Barbers, Elegance Antique Mall, Plaza Sewing, The Kitchen Company, Hart Jewelers, G. G. Sugarplum’s Bakeshop, and King Jewelers.

Families are invited to stroll through downtown on their own time and at their own pace to read the featured story. Each “chapter” directs participants to the next location.

“The Storybook Walk is a great reading activity for families to do together while still practicing physical distancing,” said Library Director Kate Lasky. “Having the story up in business windows ensures that community members can participate whenever they have time to take a short walk.”

For the September Storybook Walk, the library developed an original version of the classis fable “Stone Soup” with illustrations in nine pages, or chapters.
